Isn’t this a free in-browser Flash game? Well, yes and no. This version of Fishing Girl is not just a port; it plays rather differently from the original Flash game. So, no more about the Flash version, this is the XBLIG version of Fishing Girl.
Fishing Girl is a well-executed, charming and simple game. You cast your line and reel in fish. The better the fish the more money you earn. Spend your money to upgrade your gear and catch better fish. And earn more money. And upgrade your gear. It’s fun and compelling, cute and relaxing, addictive and….over.
There’s the chink in the armor. Only, it’s more of a gaping hole to me. The game lasts maybe all of 5 minutes if you are deliberately catching fish to make money and upgrade your gear. I like the game, but…I’ve beaten it as many times as I care to. On my first play session.
I tried just playing it like Fishing Derby and seeing what kind of score I could rack up, but the timer increases so generously with each fish caught that I could easily play forever or until the fish run out – whichever happens first. So, that was boring.
Then I tried completing the pseudo-achievements, but metagaming the non-game Fishing Girl becomes when you’re trying not to complete the game quickly becomes tedious.
So, that was that. It’s a nice game, but over way too soon.

From what I can find by Googling, this was created out of some sort of collaborative project/”challenge”, and the multiple Flash versions that exist, from different authors, are all legitimate. I’m curious though, does anyone know more? Is the source code floating around? Can someone still come in and improve it? There may be hope for it yet, to become something more substantial. It sure likes to pop up again and again, and be met with initial enthusiam followed by disappointment
And yes, the 360 version is different. It’s my favorite iteration, but none of them are terribly compelling.

It’s definitely a bit too short and sweet – I bought it and enjoyed it, but the fact it has such a terminal ending is a bit of a shame. Here’s to hoping an expanded version finds its way onto the interwebs…
For $1 I’m really enjoying the game. I come back and play it when I have a little time to kill from time to time.
